Lynton & Barnstaple Railway

Distance from Braunton: 19.6 Miles

Steam trains through rolling countryside, with views out to wild moorland and the rugged coastline

ring narrow guage train rides in Exmoor National Park at Woody Bay the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway is a "non-profit" organisation owned entirely by its Members and run almost entirely by volunteers and our one aim: to fully restore as much as we can of the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway.

Originally opened in 1898, and closed in 1935 - what you can see now at Woody Bay is the first phase in rebuilding one of the world's most famous and picturesque narrow gauge railways; the legendary Lynton & Barnstaple Railway. A one mile section has now been reopened allowing visitors to travel by train along the original 'L&B Railway' route above the Heddon Valley near Parracombe in South West England's Exmoor National Park.

Today's visitors can experience a taste of what will one day become one of the ultimate heritage narrow gauge railway experiences of the world..

** It should be noted that although we can accommodate wheelchairs in the trains we do not have turning spaces in the train due to the narrowness of our carriages. Wheelchairs that are of a width 30" or less may be accommodated in the trains. Travellers with larger chairs may wish to contact the railway in advance to discuss arrangements.
